About Prut Waterfall
Prut Waterfall is a fall of about 40 metres on the Wah Urwan (Urwan) river at Laitlyndop village in the Sohra (Cherrapunji) area of East Khasi Hills. It was opened as a tourist site by the local community around 2021, so it sees far fewer visitors than Nohkalikai or the Seven Sisters falls. The water spills off a rock overhang as a thin curtain into a clear blue-green pool ringed with large boulders. Its unusual feature is a path from the right side above the falls that leads behind the curtain of water, letting you look out through the fall. The Urwan river is fed by streams from the surrounding villages, so the flow changes a lot with the season: full and loud in the monsoon, thinner and clearer in winter. It is a good half-day add-on to a Sohra itinerary for travellers who have already seen the bigger viewpoint falls.
What to expect at Prut Waterfall
Walk: A paved trail of about 25–30 minutes from the entrance, with roughly 100 steps going downhill near the end. Expect a slower climb back. Behind the falls: A path on the right side above the fall leads behind the water; rocks are wet and slippery. Pool: Swimming in the pool is not allowed; the boulders around it make good sitting spots. Facilities: Washrooms at the entrance; no reliable food stalls, so carry water and snacks.

Best Time to Visit
October to May (monsoon for maximum flow)
Post-monsoon (October–November) is the best balance of strong water flow and drier steps. The monsoon (June–September) gives the most volume, but the trail and the path behind the falls get very slippery and the pool can be murky. Winter (December–February) brings clear, calm water but a thinner fall. Spring (March–May) is pleasant before the rains. Go in the morning or early afternoon, and avoid the behind-the-fall path during or right after heavy rain.
