About Dainthlen Falls

Dainthlen Falls is a waterfall on the Sohra (Cherrapunjee) plateau in East Khasi Hills, reached by a short detour off the road from Shillong just before Sohra town. A stream spreads over wide, flat rock shelves and pools before dropping into a gorge. The falls take their name from one of the best-known Khasi legends. U Thlen was a giant serpent that lived in a cave in the area and demanded human victims. The people of the ancient settlement that became Sohra tricked and killed it, then dragged the body onto the flat rock beside the falls and cut it up there. 'Dain Thlen' is commonly translated as 'where the Thlen was cut'. Marks on the rock surface are pointed out as traces of the story; geologists describe similar grooves as natural erosion of the stone. The site is a regular stop on Sohra sightseeing days. The flat rocks make it a popular picnic spot, and the legend gives it more meaning than a quick photo stop.

Best Time to Visit

October to November

In the monsoon (June to September) the flow is at its strongest, but Sohra gets very heavy rain and dense fog, and the rocks are slippery. Post-monsoon (October to November) is the best balance of good water flow and clearer skies. In winter (December to February) the sky is clear but the stream thins out. In spring (March to May) the flow is low until pre-monsoon showers return. Visit in late morning or midday, when fog over the plateau usually lifts.
