About India Bangladesh Border Check Post

The Dawki–Tamabil crossing joins Dawki in Meghalaya's West Jaintia Hills with Tamabil in Bangladesh's Sylhet Division. It is a land port first and a tourist stop second: long lines of trucks, most now carrying stone (coal traffic fell after the 2014 ban on rat-hole mining), wait on the Indian side to cross into Bangladesh, and people with valid papers cross on foot after document checks. Most visitors come to Dawki for boat rides on the clear Umngot River and stop at the border on the way. On the Indian side a numbered white boundary pillar and the Indian flag mark the edge of Indian territory, with an arch reading "Welcome to Bangladesh" just across the line. Visitors are kept back a short distance from the last pillar, and the Bangladeshi side, including the river bank at Jaflong, is usually busy with its own tourists. It is worth a short stop for anyone curious about how an everyday border crossing works. There is no ceremony or show here, just trade, Border Security Force (BSF) personnel and a view across the line.

What to expect at India Bangladesh Border Check Post

Border point: A boundary pillar, the Indian flag and the gate into Bangladesh, watched by a small number of BSF personnel. Trucks: Queues of loaded trucks waiting for customs clearance, often lining the approach road. Photos: Visitors commonly take photos on the Indian side. Follow any instruction from BSF staff and do not photograph security posts or personnel without permission. Crossing: Tourists cannot step across for a look. Entering Bangladesh needs a valid passport and visa and goes through immigration. Nearby: Umngot River boating at Dawki and Shnongpdeng, and views across to Jaflong on the Bangladeshi bank.

Visitor Information

Best Time to Visit

November to April

Winter (December–February) and the dry months either side, roughly November to April, are the best time to visit Dawki, as the Umngot River is clear and calm for boating. In the monsoon (June–September) the river turns muddy, boating may be suspended and the hill road can see landslides, though the border itself is still reachable. Go in the morning or early afternoon: truck queues build through the day, and the drive back to Shillong is best done in daylight.

Getting There

The border is at Dawki, about 80–85 km from Shillong, a drive of roughly 2.5–3 hours on the Shillong–Dawki road (NH206) via Pynursla.

The border is at Dawki, about 80–85 km from Shillong, a drive of roughly 2.5–3 hours on the Shillong–Dawki road (NH206) via Pynursla. The road descends steeply through the last stretch into Dawki, crosses the suspension bridge over the Umngot River, and the check post is a short drive further on near the edge of town. Expect slow traffic where trucks queue for the crossing. Most people combine it with Dawki, Shnongpdeng or Mawlynnong in one day. A private cab from Shillong can be booked with Tour Meghalaya. Shared vehicles to Dawki also leave from Shillong.
