About Rhododendron Trek

The Rhododendron Trek, also called the Rhododendron Riot trail, is a day walk on the eastern side of Shillong that climbs towards Upper Shillong. It runs through the Shillong Peak–Upper Shillong forest reserve, part of the Shillong Rhododendron State Park, and is protected by the state Forest Department. The trail is about 4 to 5 km long and passes through pine and rhododendron forest, past small streams, British-era retaining walls and World War II bunkers. Some of the city's water sources lie in this catchment. In April 2025 the Chief Minister walked the route, and the government said it plans to add signboards, benches and other amenities. The main draw is spring, when the rhododendron trees flower red and pink, but the trail is a cool, shaded walk for much of the year and offers views back over the city from the higher sections. It suits reasonably fit walkers, families with older children and birdwatchers looking for a half-day outing without leaving Shillong.

Best Time to Visit

March to May

Spring (March to May, especially April) is the flowering season, when the rhododendrons are in bloom. Post-monsoon (October to November) and winter (December to February) are dry, clear and cool, good for walking though without flowers. Monsoon (June to September) makes the trail muddy and slippery, with leeches in places, and is best avoided. Start in the morning, finish well before dark, and do not walk the forest alone.
