About Kynrem Falls
Kynrem Falls is a three-tiered waterfall in East Khasi Hills, about 12 km from Sohra (Cherrapunji). With a total drop of about 305 metres, it is often listed among the tallest waterfalls in India. The water splits into two streams on the upper tiers and joins again on the last drop. The usual way to see it is from Thangkharang Park, a small forest park on the edge of the cliffs, reportedly managed by the Meghalaya Forest Department. Lookout points in the park face the falls, and on clear days the same cliff edge looks out over the plains of Bangladesh. The park also overlooks Khoh Ramhah, a large rock formation shaped like an upturned conical Khasi basket. A road also runs across the base of the falls for a closer view. Kynrem is best in and just after the monsoon. Its flow drops sharply in the dry months, and visitors in December and later have found it thin or almost dry.
What to expect at Kynrem Falls
Viewpoint: The falls are viewed from lookout decks in Thangkharang Park, a short walk from the parking area. A road near the base gives a second angle. Views: Kynrem's three tiers, the Khoh Ramhah rock and, on clear days, the Bangladesh plains below. Park: A small, quiet garden with benches and picnic spots. Little walking is needed, so it suits older travellers and families. Practical: Mobile signal is weak around the park, and cloud can roll in by afternoon, so download maps in advance.
Visitor Information
Best Time to Visit
July to November; morning to early afternoon
Monsoon (Jun–Sep) is when the falls are at full flow, though fog and cloud often hide them. Post-monsoon (Oct–Nov) is the best balance of strong flow and clearer skies. Winter (Dec–Feb) gives clear views of the Bangladesh plains, but the falls can be very thin or dry. Spring (Mar–May) brings variable flow as pre-monsoon rain arrives. Go in the morning to early afternoon, before cloud builds up, and note the park is reported to close around 4 pm.
Getting There
Thangkharang Park is about 8–12 km beyond Sohra town, making Kynrem Falls roughly 62–66 km from Shillong, about 2–2.5 hours by road.
Thangkharang Park is about 8–12 km beyond Sohra town, making Kynrem Falls roughly 62–66 km from Shillong, about 2–2.5 hours by road. Drive to Sohra on the Shillong–Sohra road and continue past town to the park gate. From the parking area it is a short, easy walk to the viewpoints, so no trekking is needed. Public transport does not run to the park, so a hired vehicle is the practical way to get there. A private cab from Shillong can be booked with Tour Meghalaya, usually combined with other Sohra sights.
