About Don Bosco Centre for Indigenous Cultures

The Don Bosco Centre for Indigenous Cultures, usually called the Don Bosco Museum, stands within the Sacred Heart Church complex at Mawlai Phudmuri in Shillong. It is run by the Salesians of Don Bosco and is one of the largest museums in the country devoted to the indigenous communities of Northeast India. The seven-storey building holds about 17 themed galleries. They cover the region's tribes through their agriculture, weapons, dress, housing, musical instruments, art, religion, languages, prehistory and geology. Displays combine original artefacts, life-size dioramas and photographs. That makes it a useful first stop if you want to understand the Khasi, Garo, Naga and other communities before travelling further in the region. The top level opens onto a rooftop skywalk with wide views over Shillong and the surrounding hills. Many visitors find the skywalk alone worth the climb. Expect to spend longer than you plan, because the galleries are dense and well labelled.

Visitor Information

Best Time to Visit

Year-round (closed Sundays)

As an indoor museum it works in any season and is a good plan for a rainy monsoon day (June–September), when outdoor viewpoints are often clouded over. For the rooftop skywalk, clear post-monsoon and winter days (October–February) and spring (March–May) give the best views. Arrive in the morning so you have enough time before last entry, which is about an hour before closing. The museum is closed on Sundays.
